I am three-quarters of the way through the text, working it in as a narrative to our homeschool history studies over the course of two years (third and fourth grade)....so, we use this as a base narrative and supplement A LOT with library books, other reference books we own, our own research and independent studies. We enjoy the highly-readable text, and we frequently pause to talk about and then spend time researching specific aspects in more depth. This book works well as a base, not the be-all-end-all for history. I don't think any book fitting the bill for elementary-level narrative style could (or should) be comprehensive, so you'll naturally see gaps and bents in the narration. Nothing that worries me, though. It's enjoyable to read, does not contain fundamentalist religious views, nor conflicts with our Christian beliefs, fits with a Charlotte Mason style of teaching and lines up with our wish to be (nearly) historically factual. I find it valuable to show children how history can't be understood or gleaned from one, or just a few, sources....so, again, we use this as only one part of our study of history.Product details

This print is bad. There's a page or two that doesn't even have the full text. Spend the money and buy another edition.
This is hard to review. The content is exactly what I was looking for, but the actual book itself... The book is a photocopy of an actual book. The print is fuzzy, the cover was bent on the original so the photocopy is weird looking with a "crease" that isn't really there. Overall it's very disappointing to pay for this. Will probably return and buy used from ThriftBooks.com
The pages look photocopied from cover to cover; fuzzy text and darkened outlines of pages. Does not seem like a professional print job. Very disappointed. We had an earlier edition from the library and that was fine. I thought I'd buy the newer one, but the print quality is so bad.
We love this book. As a secular homeschooling family we come back to this often. Highly recommended for a basic overview of history. We had the hardback version which is very sturdy and easy to handle. We passed it on to a friend when we got the kindle version. Both are great.
It is obviously a product of its time, but still very useful as a resource. The author was/is a theistic evolutionist. The Bible is treated as history and evolution as a fact. However, if you are anti-evolution or anti-Bible that doesn't mean you shouldn't consider this book. It has many wonderful qualities and makes a good resource for anyone wanting to teach children history.
I love the basic structure and overview. The model is good, even if I might change some of the detailing. I bought this book after listening to the audible version of it. As a teacher, I think this is a good resource for class prep. As a parent, I would give it to my child if I was a theistic evolutionist, it is written in a way that kids would find interesting. I am not a theistic evolutionist.
Looks like the printed this book with PDF's that are very fuzzy. Will be returning it asap. I'm bummed because I was REALLY looking forward to this book.

Can't even return it so now I'm stuck with this piece of junk.
I cannot speak for the literature, I returned this book before reading it. This edition that is selling is a fake. The entire book, including the cover and all text, is out of focus. Looks as if it's a photo copy. I didn't read far enough through the reviews before purchasing. I now see that other reviews warned of this. should pull this stock.
I will try to buy the book elsewhere.
